Iga ( Japanese 伊 賀国 , Iga no kuni ) or Ishū ( 伊州 ) was a historical province of Japan .

The area belonging to the Kinki region lay in the west of today's Mie Prefecture and included the small Ueno basin surrounded by mountains . The old provincial capital ( kokufu ) was in today's Iga . In the past, the province was quite inaccessible due to poor traffic routes. Despite its relative proximity to the former imperial residences of Nara and Kyōto , it was considered remote.

Iga bordered the provinces of Ise , Ōmi , Yamato, and Yamashiro .

The region around the city of Iga , together with Kōga (today Kōka ) in Ōmi, is the birthplace of ninjutsu and was a stronghold of the ninjas , for example under the rule of Hattori Hanzō . The haiku poet Matsuo Bashō was also born here.
