Kitami Province

Kitami Province ( Japanese 北 見 国 ) was a short-lived historical province in Japan on the island of Hokkaidō . It corresponds to today's sub-prefectures Soya and Abashiri (without a part of the Abashiri district) of today's Hokkaidō Prefecture .

history

The province was founded together with the other provinces of Hokkaidōs on August 15, 1869 with eight counties . The 1872 census showed 1511 inhabitants (Japanese, excluding the Ainu ). In 1882 the provinces in Hokkaidō are abolished and the prefectural system introduced.
