Location of the Province of Yoshino (716)

Yoshino ( Japanese 芳 野 監 , -gen ) was a short-lived Japanese province in the 8th century. It consisted only of the Yoshino district ( 吉野 郡 , -gun ). Today it is the southern part of Nara Prefecture .

Yoshino was probably founded around 716 , similar to the province of Izumi . It was called gen ( ) in contrast to the kuni ( ) of the other provinces. The two provinces were unusually small and were home to second palaces. The province maintained the Yoshino Palace and Izumi the Chinu Palace. Yoshino Province was dissolved sometime after 738.
