Tajima ( Japanese 但 馬 国 , Tajima no kuni ) or Tanshū ( 但 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan in Kansai and today forms the northern district of the Hyōgo prefecture bordering the Sea of Japan . Tajima bordered the provinces of Harima , Inaba , Tamba, and Tango .

The old provincial capital ( kokufu ) was in modern Toyooka , either in the Izushi-chō district or in Hidaka-chō . For most of the Sengoku period , the province was ruled by the Yamana family, who submitted to Oda Nobunaga .

Although the provinces no longer exist as a political entity, many residents of the area identify strongly with the name and history of the province.

Tajima is best known as the home of the Kobe beef , for its many onsen , beaches and small ski resorts. The main industries are forestry, fishing, agriculture and tourism.
