Iyo Province

Iyo ( Japanese. 伊 予 国 , Iyo no kuni ) or Yoshū ( 予 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan in the area of ​​today's Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku . Iyo bordered the provinces of Awa , Sanuki, and Tosa .

The old capital ( kokufu ) was near Imabari . During the Sengoku period , the province was split into several fiefs , the largest of which was mostly ruled by the castle in Matsuyama . For a short time Iyo was united under the Chōsokabe family of neighboring Tosa. In 1584 Toyotomi Hideyoshi conquered Shikoku and re-awarded the fiefs.

In the Edo period , the Matsuyama - han ( Hisamatsu-Matsudaira with 150,000 Koku ), Uwajima -han ( Date with 100,000 Koku), Ōzu -han ( Katō : 60,000 Koku) and others ruled the province . a. side by side.
