Iwase Province (718)

Iwase ( Japanese 石 背 国 , Iwase no kuni ) was a short-lived province of Japan during the Nara period . It corresponds to the central and western part of today's Fukushima Prefecture .

history

The province emerged together with the Iwaki province in the 5th month 718 as a separation from the Michinoku (Mutsu) province . Between 722 and the 3rd month 724 it was again added to the Michinoku Province.

Analogous to the province of Yamashiro ( 山 背 国 ) it is assumed that in the 7th century the Kanji 背 was not pronounced as se , but shiro .

In 1868 the province of Iwashiro was founded, which comprised roughly the same area and whose name, although written with different Kanji, is derived from the presumed Iwase province.

structure

The province was divided into 5 districts ( kōri ):

  • Aizu ( 会 津 郡 , Aizu no kōri )
  • Asaka ( 安 積 郡 , Asaka no kōri )
  • Iwase ( 石 背 郡 , Iwase no kōri )
  • Shirakawa ( 白河 郡 , Shirakawa no kōri )
  • Shinobu ( 信 夫 郡 , Shinobu no kōri )
