The US Post Office at Belvidere is a historic building in downtown Belvidere , Illinois . It was built in 1911 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 2000 with the number 00000473 .
history
The structure was built in 1911 by the Rockford contractor E. Maffioli . The construction supervision for the United States Department of the Treasury is carried out by AN Eason. The construction schedule was for construction to be completed on September 1 and commissioning on October 11, 1911. The work was completed within the timeframe and the post office was inaugurated on October 11, 1911 with great participation from the interested public. The post office was in operation until 1997 when it was put up for sale. In 1998 it was finally sold to a private individual.
architecture
The US Post Office Belvidere is built in the neoclassical style and has several characteristics typical of this style. It was designed by James Knox Taylor , who was then chief architect of the US Treasury Department. He used a mixture of classical and renaissance forms in his design. The interior dome, the broken gable triangle above the entrance area (a typical form of neoclassicism), fine-grained stone carvings, a monumental frame and the sculptural details are usually found in buildings in the neoclassic style.
Historical meaning
The Belvidere Post Office reflects the architecture preferred by the federal government of the United States in the early 20th century. The building is a significant example of Classical Revival architecture and one of the standout buildings of this style in Belvidere.
