Owari ( Japanese 尾 張国 Owari no kuni ) or Bishū ( 尾 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan . Today the area is the western half of Aichi Prefecture .

The old capital ( kokufu ) of Owari was near Inazawa in the west of the province. Two of the most famous warlords of the Sengoku period , Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi , came from the Owari province, Oda had a castle near Kiyosu .

Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa Shogunate with his Nagoya Castle near Nagoya and handed control of the Owari fief to one of his sons, who was to establish the Owari-Tokugawa line , the largest fief of the Tokugawa after the possession of the shogun himself.

In 1871 the provinces of Owari and Mikawa were merged and in 1872 the Aichi Prefecture was formed.
