Province of Kii

Kii Province (now: Wakayama Prefecture and part of Mie Prefecture )

Kii ( jap. 紀伊国 , Kii no kuni ) or Kishū ( 紀 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan in the part of the island of Honshū that now forms the Wakayama Prefecture and the southern part of the Mie Prefecture . Kii bordered the provinces of Ise , Izumi , Kawachi , Shima, and Yamato . The Kii Peninsula takes its name from the province.

In the Edo period , the province was part of the Han Kishu . Daimyō were the Kishū branch of the Tokugawa , one of the Gosanke , with their seat in Wakayama Castle . Depending on the source, the Han is also referred to as Kii or Wakayama.
