Chikuzen Province, now part of Fukuoka Prefecture

Chikuzen ( Japanese 筑 前 国 , Chikuzen no kuni ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan in the area of today's Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyushu . The southern and northern parts of the prefecture are from other provinces. Chikuzen bordered the provinces of Buzen , Bungo , Chikugo, and Hizen .

The province emerged at the end of the 7th century when the old Tsukushi ( 筑紫 国 ) province was split up into the provinces of Chikuzen ("front Tsukushi") and Chikugo ("rear Tsukushi"). These were also collectively referred to as Chikushū ( 筑 州 , "Tsukushi Province (s)").

In the 7th century the Dazaifu was established here, which was not only the provincial capital ( kokufu ), but a special military administrative zone, the office of which was in charge of all the provinces on Kyushu. It was located near the present-day city of Dazaifu . However, Fukuoka became more important in modern times.

At the end of the 13th century, an invading Mongol army landed in Chikuzen. The main force was destroyed by a typhoon ( kamikaze ).
