Suwa ( Japanese. 諏 方 国 , Suwa no kuni ) was a short-lived historical provinces of Japan of the Tōsandō in the southern part of what is now Nagano Prefecture .

According to the Imperial Chronicle of Shoku Nihongi , it was split off from the Shinano Province on July 24, 721 ( traditionally : Yōrō 5/6/26) , but was re-incorporated on April 17, 731 (Tempyō 3/3/7).

It is believed that Suwa County ( 諏 方 郡 , today: 諏 訪 郡 ) was in its center. Ina County (divided into Kamiina-gun and Shimoina-gun in 1879 ) probably also belonged to the province. The exact border with Shinano and the capital ( kokufu ) are unknown.
