Tsushima ( Japanese 対 馬 国 , Tsushima no kuni ) or Taishū ( 対 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan on the island of Tsushima . Today the area administratively corresponds to the Tsushima Sub-prefecture with the city of Tsushima in Nagasaki Prefecture .

history

The first mention of Tsushima is in the Chinese Weizhi Worenchuan from the late 3rd century in which it as Duima-guo ( Chinese  對 馬 國 , W.-G. Tui-hai kuo , Japanese Tsuikai-koku ) one of 30 kuni ( Chin. guo , states) who was Wa (Japanese). However, when Tsushima became a province of the Japanese central state is unknown.

The province has a strategically important location and played an important role in defense against possible invasions from the mainland and in trade with Korea . After Japan was defeated by the Tang in the Battle of Hakusukinoe in 663, Kaneda Castle was built on the island.

The province was controlled by the Tsushima no kuni no miyatsuko until the Heian period . This clan was then replaced by the Ahiru family . The So family gained power in the mid-13th century and took control of the entire island in the late 15th century.

In the Edo period Tsushima was the fief Tsushima-Fuchū dominating (fief Izuhara) of the Sun clan. This was responsible for diplomatic relations and had a trade monopoly on trade with Joseon Korea .

The capital of the province ( kokufu ) was located in the modern Izuharamachi -Kokubu district of the city of Tsushima.

As a result of the abolition of the feudal system, Tsushima became Izuhara Prefecture in 1871 . In the same year it was added to Imari Prefecture , which was renamed Saga Prefecture a year later . Tsushima finally came to Nagasaki Prefecture in 1872 .

Counties

Throughout history up to modern times, Tsushima consisted of 2 counties ( , - gun ):

Both counties were finally united on March 1, 2004 to form the city of Tsushima.
