Nagasaki ( Jap. 長崎県 Nagasaki ken ) is a prefecture of Japan . It is located in southern Japan in the Kyushu region, mainly on the island of Kyushu. The seat of the prefecture administration is the city of the same name Nagasaki .

geography

Nagasaki Prefecture (excluding the Shimabara Peninsula in the southeast and islands in the north and west) with Ōmura Bay in the middle

Nagasaki Prefecture is located in the far west of Kyushu . Since the prefecture is surrounded by the East China Sea in 3 directions and consists of numerous smaller islands, it has the longest coastline in Japan after Hokkaidō with 4,165 km. In the north and northeast it borders on the Saga prefecture .

Larger islands and archipelagos are Tsushima and Iki in the north in the Tsushima Strait , and the Gotō Islands in the west.

The 320 km² large großemura Bay is centrally located . This is only connected in the north via the approximately 200 m wide Hario Strait and the 10 m wide Haiki Strait at its narrowest point with the Sasebo Bay ( 佐世保 湾 , Sasebo-wan ) of the East China Sea. To the west of Ōmura Bay is the Nishisonogi Peninsula and southwest of the Nagasaki Peninsula . In the southeast is the Ariake Sea , a 1,700 km² bay that winds along the Shimabara Peninsula with the dominating Unzen volcano mountains.

history

Nagasaki Prefecture comprises the western part of the historical Hizen Province and the island provinces of Tsushima and Iki . In the Edo period the area was ruled in the fiefdoms of Saga, Shimabara, Ōmura, Hirado, Hirado-Shinden, Fukue and Tsushima-Fuchū. The city of Nagasaki, the foreign trade access to Japan during the land closure , was administered by a magistrate ( Nagasaki bugyō ) directly from the Shogun.

The Nagasaki Prefecture was created in the Meiji Restoration in 1868 as Nagasaki-fu - a city prefecture like Edo or Osaka - from the previous magistrate of the shogunate. In 1869 the prefecture was transformed into an ordinary prefecture, -ken . In the following years the borders changed several times; the Saga Prefecture (temporarily: Prefecture Imari) was finally separated from Nagasaki only 1,883th

politics

Political groups in the prefecture parliament
(as of May 14, 2019)

A total of 46 seats

Hōdō Nakamura has been the governor of Nagasaki since 2010 . He was re-elected for a third term in the 2018 Nagasaki gubernatorial election with LDP-Kōmeitō support against the communist Toshihiko Haraguchi - already the only opposing candidate in the 2014 election. The turnout ( 2010 : 60.1%, 2014: 40.7%) fell to a record low of 36.03%. The 46 members of parliament were elected in the April 2019 elections. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) remained clearly the strongest party with 28 seats.

In the national parliament , Nagasaki is represented by four directly elected MPs in the lower house and one per election in the upper house , after the elections in 2016 , 2017 , 2019 and party reshuffles since then (as of August 2019):

  • in the lower house
    • for the constituency Nagasaki 1 with the majority of the city of Nagasaki Hideko Nishioka ( DVP , 1st term of office), the daughter of Takeo Nishioka , previously defeated Minshintō candidate for Nagasaki in the upper house election 2016,
    • for constituency 2 with the city of Isahaya since 2012 Kanji Katō (LDP, 3rd term of office), previously member of the prefectural parliament for eight electoral terms,
    • for constituency 3 with the city of Ōmura and a large part of the outer islands of Nagasaki Yaichi Tanigawa (LDP, 6th term of office), former chairman of the culture and science committee,
    • for constituency 4 with most of the city of Sasebo and the north and west of the main island part of Seigo Kitamura prefecture (LDP, 6th term), former chairman of the security committee,
  • in the upper house
    • by 2025 Yūichirō Koga (LDP, 2nd term), former Vice Mayor of Nagasaki, who was confirmed in 2019 with around 52% of the vote against opposition candidate Ayumi Shirakawa (DVP, 45%), and
    • until 2022 Genjirō Kaneko (LDP, 2nd term), previously governor of Nagasaki for twelve years, switched to the national parliament in 2010 and re-elected in 2016 with 53% of the votes against Hideko Nishioka (45%).

Besides that of Tokyo, that of Nagasaki is the only prefectural administration whose transport office operates public transport itself.

Administrative division

Regional division of Nagasaki by the prefectural administration:
  • Nagasaki region ( 長崎 地域 , ~ chiiki )
  • Kenhoku region ( 県 北 地域 , i.e. the "prefectural north ")
  • Ken'ō region ( 県 央 地域 , i.e. the "prefectural center")
  • Shimabara region ( 島 原 地域 )
  • Gotō Region ( 五 島 地域 )
  • Iki region ( 壱 岐 地域 )
  • Tsushima region ( 対 馬 地域 )
  • The main building of the Prefectural Administration in the Edomachi District of Nagasaki

Since 2010 there are still 21 parishes in Nagasaki: 13 [district] cities (- shi ) , two of them in a special form for large cities, and eight [district] cities (- chō ) . The last village (- mura ) Ōshima-mura disappeared during the Heisei territorial reform on October 1, 2005 when it was incorporated into the city of Hirado. When the present-day community forms were introduced in 1889, Nagasaki initially had over 300 communities, most of them villages; before the great Shōwa territorial reform of the 1950s, there were over 150 communities, and in 2000 there were 79.

Note: For the sake of readability, multi-part place and district names (double places, for differentiation prefixed province / prefecture / district names, cardinal points, etc.) and regional authority suffixes have been separated by a hyphen, the other Romanization practice is inconsistent.
