The Yamanashi Prefecture ( Jap. 山梨県 , Yamanashi-ken ) is a prefecture of Japan . The prefecture is located in the Chūbu region on the island of Honshū . The seat of the prefecture administration is Kofu .

The name literally means mountain pear and denotes the Pyrus pyrifolia var. Pyrifolia .

history

The prefecture is territorially the successor to the ancient province of Kai , consisting of the four districts of Yamanashi , Yatsushiro , Koma and Tsuru . This was the dominion of Takeda Shingen during the Warring States Period . In addition, the Kai Hyakuhachi Reijō , the 108 spiritual places of Kai, are also located in Yamanashi .

In the Edo period , the principality (- han ) Kofu was initially located here and at times also other smaller principalities; but Kofu fell to the Shogunate in 1724 when the Yanagisawa were transferred to Kōriyama in Yamato Province . Since then, the province of Kai belonged essentially (without spiritual property and similar small territories) to the shogunate domain ( bakuryō ) and was administered by various administrators / bailiffs (daikan) , part of the province of Kai was under the control of the Gosankyō family branch at the end of the Edo period the Tayasu [-Tokugawa].

The prefecture of Kai ( 甲 斐 府 , Kai-fu ) was created in the Meiji Restoration in 1868 through the amalgamation of the prefectures (-ken) Fuchū ( 府中 ), Isawa ( 石 和 ) and Ichikawa ( ), which came from the shogunate administrations / bailiffs (daikan -sho) in Kai Province. In 1869, Kai Prefecture was renamed Kofu Prefecture ( 甲 府 県 , Kōfu-ken ). In 1870 the land held by the Tayasu was added to this. In 1871 previously managed areas in Kai were transferred to Kofu from Nirayama Prefecture (another prefecture from former Shogunate country, then to Ashigara Prefecture, now Kanagawa, Shizuoka and Tokyo), so that the prefecture included the entire Kai Province. On (Gregorian) December 31, 1871 (in the then still valid lunisolar calendar of November 20), Kofu was renamed Yamanashi. Today, Gregorian November 20th is "Prefectural Citizens Day" ( kenmin no hi , 県 民 の 日 ) in Yamanashi .

The first 30-member prefectural assembly (then kenkai , "prefectural assembly ") of Yamanashi was elected in March 1879 and convened in April.

geography

Yamanashi is located on the southern part of the Japanese Alps and shares Mount Fuji with Shizuoka Prefecture , to which it serves as a starting point.

politics

(as of June 25, 2019)

A total of 37 seats
  • Jimintō Seishinkai (自民党 誠心 会 ): 26
  • Liberal Yamanashi (with KDP , DVP ): 6
  • Reiwakai : 2
  • Team Yamanashi : 1
  • Kōmeitō : 1
  • KPY : 1

The governor of Yamanashi is in his first term of office Kōtarō Nagasaki , a former liberal-democratic member of the lower house who, in January 2019 with the support of the national governing parties LDP and Kōmeitō, with a significantly higher turnout with almost 50% of the votes against the incumbent KDP and DVP- supported incumbent Hitoshi Gotō (barely 42%) prevailed. The 37 MPs in the Yamanashi Parliament were elected in a unified election in April 2019 . The only party noteworthy is the Liberal Democratic Party , which won 17 seats.

For the lower house of the national parliament , Yamanashi belongs, although geographically mostly not to Kantō , together with the heavily urbanized prefectures of Chiba and Kanagawa to the proportional electoral block of South Kantō . In the majority election for the lower house, Yamanashi has only elected two MPs since 2014, 2017 Katsuhito Nakajima (3rd term, Minshintō independent, now part of the Shakaihoshō o tatenaosu kokumin kaigi faction ) and Noriko Horiuchi (1st term, LDP-Kōmeitō-supported independent, LDP-nominated). In the upper house Yamanashi after the elections in 2016 and 2019 by the Liberal Democrats Hiroshi Moriya and the Democrat Yuka Miyazawa (now the KDP) represented.

Since 2010 there are still 27 communities in Yamanashi: 13 [district] cities (- shi ) , of which only the capital Kofu in a special form for large cities (since 2019 "core city" ), eight [district] cities ( 6 -chō / 2 - machi ) and six villages (- mura ) . After the introduction of today's municipal forms in 1889, there were 246 municipalities, in 1945 only 201, in 1955 already 88 and in 1999 before the major Heisei regional reform, 64.

Remarks:

  • There are areas with an unclear course of the municipal boundaries, including Lake Motosu with 4.70 km², which was not assigned to a municipality in the list but is included in the prefectural area,
and unclear external prefecture borders with Shizuoka.
