Kai Province

Kai ( Japanese 甲 斐 国 , Kai no kuni ) or Kōshū ( 甲 州 ) is one of the historical provinces of Japan , which corresponds to today's Yamanashi Prefecture . It is located on Honshū west of Tokyo in a mountainous region remote from the sea. The Fuji is on its border with Shizuoka Prefecture .

In the Sengoku period , the warlord Takeda Shingen ruled the province of Kai from his fortress at Kōfu ( shū- Fu chū ).

The Japanese dog breed Kai Inu is named after this province.
