Oshima Province
Oshima ( Japanese 渡 島国 , Oshima no kuni ) was a short-lived historical province of Japan on the Oshima Peninsula in the area of today's Hokkaidō Prefecture . It essentially corresponds to the area of the sub-prefectures of Oshima and Hiyama .
history
The province was founded on August 15, 1869 with seven counties ( 郡 , gun ). The 1872 census showed 75,830 inhabitants (excluding the native Ainu ). In July 1881, the Tsugaru-gun and the Fukushima-gun were merged to form the Matsumae-gun. In 1882 the provinces on Hokkaidō were dissolved.
