Hiyama Sub-Prefecture
Hiyama ( Japanese 檜 山 振興 局 , Hiyama-shinkō-kyoku ) is a sub- prefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture . It has an area of 2,630 km² and a population of 48,138 (as of August 31, 2005).
geography
The Hiyama Sub-prefecture extends over the western part of the Oshima Peninsula - the eastern part belongs to the Oshima Sub-prefecture - and the island of Okushiri .
history
The sub-prefecture was established on 1897 as Hiyama-shichō ( 檜 山 支 庁 }). When Hokkaidō was reorganized on April 1, 2010, the name was changed to Hiyama-shinkō-kyoku , as well as the administrative subordination to the sub-prefecture of Oshima .
Administrative division
There are no large cities ( 市 , shi ) in Hiyama . The seat of the sub-prefecture administration is in Esashi .

Reorganizations
- On September 1, 2005, the city of Taisei in the district of Kudo and the cities of Setana and Kitahiyama in the district of Setana merged to form the new city of Setana in the district of Kudo.
- On October 1, 2005, Kumaishi City in Nishi County and Yakumo City in Yamakoshi County in Oshima Sub-Prefecture merged to form the new city of Yakumo in the newly created Futami County . The urban area of Kumaishi was added to the sub-prefecture of Oshima.
