Ishikari Sub-Prefecture
Ishikari ( Japanese 石 狩 振興 局 , Ishikari-shinkō-kyoku ) is a sub- prefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture . It has an area of 3,539.84 km² and a population of 2,310,001 (as of October 1, 2005).
In Ishikari Sub-Prefecture, Shikotsu-Tōya National Park is to the south and Shokambetsu-Teuri-Yagishiri Quasi-National Park is to the north.
history
The sub-prefecture was set up in 1897 under the name Sapporo Sub-prefecture ( 札幌 支 庁 , Sapporo-shichō ). In 1922 it was renamed Ishikari Sub-prefecture ( 石 狩 支 庁 , Ishikari-shichō ) based on the Ishikari Province . In 1975 the district of Tarukawa ( 樽 川 地区 , -chiku ) was incorporated into Otaru in the Shiribeshi sub-prefecture and thus reduced the sub-prefecture.
When Hokkaidō was reorganized on April 1, 2010, it was renamed Ishikari-shinkō-kyoku .

Reorganizations
- On October 1, 2005, the villages of Atsuta in Atsuta County and Hamamasu in Hamamasu County were incorporated into Ishikari. Both districts were then dissolved.
