Nemuro sub-prefecture
Nemuro ( Japanese 根 室 振興 局 , Nemuro-shinkō-kyoku ) is a sub- prefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture . It has, including the South Kuril Islands claimed by Japan ( Kuril conflict ), an area of 8,533.96 km² and a population of 86,152 (as of July 31, 2004).
history
The establishment of the sub-prefecture Nemuro ( 根 室 支 庁 , Nemuro-shichō ) took place in November 1897. In December 1903, the merger with the sub-prefecture Shana ( 紗 那 支 庁 , Shana-shichō ) followed. In August 1945 the Soviet Union occupied the Kuril Islands. On April 28, 1952, Japan gave up its claims to the Kuril Islands north of Etorofu (the counties of Uruppu , Shimushiru and Shumushu on the islands of the same name, Uruppu , Shimushiru and Shumushu ) with the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty .
When Hokkaidō was reorganized on April 1, 2010, it was renamed Nemuro-shinkō-kyoku , as well as the administrative subordination to the sub-prefecture of Kushiro .
