Yuzhno-Kurilsk ( Russian Южно-Курильск ) is an urban-type settlement in Sakhalin Oblast ( Russia ) with 5832 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located on a headland on the east coast of the island of Kunashir, which belongs to the southern group of the Kuriles .

Yuzhno-Kurilsk is the administrative center of the Yuzhno-Kurilsk Raion of the same name ("South Kuril Raion") and today the largest town in the entire archipelago. It is located 550 kilometers (as the crow flies) southeast of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Oblast Administrative Center (on Sakhalin ).

history

As early as the 19th century - before the Kuril Islands were included in the Treaty of Shimoda in 1855 - there were several Japanese settlements on Kunashir, such as Furukamappu ( Japanese 古 釜 布 ) in the area of today's Yuzhno-Kurilsk .

During the Second World War , Kunashir was taken by the Red Army on September 1, 1945 without a fight. As a result, the Japanese civilian population was deported until 1947 and Kunashir was incorporated into the Soviet Union like the neighboring islands , which, however, Japan still does not recognize and therefore both the island and the settlement are part of its sub-prefecture of Nemuro ( Kuril conflict ).

The establishment of a new settlement Yuzhno-Kurilsk (Russian for "South Kuril settlement") as the administrative center for the newly created Rajon of Sakhalin Oblast began in 1946 mainly with the help of Japanese prisoners of war. In 1949 urban-type settlement was granted.

After the settlement directly on the coast was badly destroyed by a tsunami in 1953 , it was rebuilt about 30 meters higher. On October 5, 1994, an earthquake and subsequent tsunami damaged 90 percent of the buildings, killing 11 people.

Culture and sights

Since 1991 there has been a local museum of the South Kuril Islands in Yuzhno-Kurilsk .

Economy and Infrastructure

Yuzhno-Kurilsk's economy is dominated by fishing and processing. The island administration has high hopes for the development of tourism, especially from Japan.

Roads connect the settlement with the few north (Otradnoye) and south (Gorjatschi Pljasch, Golownino) villages of the island. Mendeleyevo Airport is located about 15 kilometers southwest on the road to Golownino. However, the airport has hardly been renewed by the Japanese since it was built, so it was out of service for some time until the mid-1990s and closed again from 2006. At the moment there is a connection to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (November 2008).

There is a weekly passenger ship connection to Korsakow on Sakhalin.
