Alexandrowsk-Sakhalinsky ( Russian Алекса́ндровск-Сахали́нский ) is a city in Sakhalin Oblast ( Russia ) with 10,613 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the west of the Sakhalin Island on the coast of the Tatar Sound between the Sea of ​​Japan and Sea of ​​Okhotsk , about 550 km north of the oblast capital of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk .

The city of Alexandrowsk-Sakhalinsky is directly subordinate to the oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

Alexandrowsk-Sakhalinsky is connected to the island's fixed road network; the nearest railway line is 60 kilometers away through Tymovskoye .

history

The bay, on which the city of Alexandrowsk-Sakhalinsky lies today, was first described during the Amure expedition from 1851–1855 under Gennady Nevelskoi and named after the Tsar Alexander I Alexander Bay . In 1869 a farm was established, which later became the village of Alexandrowka .

In 1881 a military post was set up, which from 1884 as Alexandrowski post with the separation of Sakhalin as an independent territorial unit from the then Primorye Oblast also served as the administrative center of the island. The administration of the exile area ( Katorga ) Sakhalin has been here since 1869 and the seat of the island's military governor since 1894 . After the surrender of the southern part of Sakhalin to Japan under the Treaty of Portsmouth , the city was the administrative center of the northern part that remained with Russia from 1909.

In 1917 the city charter was granted under the name Alexandrowsk , in 1926 the addition -Sachalinski was added to distinguish it from other places of the same name.

From 1918 to 1920 the city was in the hands of Admiral Kolchak's troops during the Russian Civil War , and then occupied by Japan until 1925.

From 1932 to 1947 Alexandrowsk-Sakhalinsky was the administrative center of the newly founded Sakhalin Oblast.

Culture and sights

A number of buildings from the 19th century have been preserved in the town, both wooden houses and stone administrative buildings, such as the treasury from 1880. A lighthouse from 1864 has been preserved three kilometers away .

In the city there is a local history museum named after Anton Chekhov , which was originally opened as the first museum on the island in 1896. Since 1990 the literature and historical museum "Chekhov and Sakhalin" has been connected in the house in which the writer lived in 1890 during his trip to Sakhalin. Under the impression of the trip, Chekhov wrote the travel report The island of Sakhalin . There is a monument to Chekhov in the museum park.

Alexandrowsk-Sakhalinsky has the oldest and previously most important port on the island of Sakhalin. Today smaller shipping companies are based here, such as a repair yard.

Hard coal is mined in the Mgatschi mine near the city . In the city there are companies in the food, fish and wood industries.
