geography

The city is located in the north of the Sakhalin Island, about 850 km north of the Oblast capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk near the east coast between the bays ( lagoons ) Urkt and Ketu of the Sea of Okhotsk .

The city of Ocha is directly subordinate to the oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

Okha is the end of the road from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to the north of the island. Until the end of 2006, a narrow-gauge (750 mm) railway line ran from Nogliki to Ocha. A broad gauge line that connects Ocha with the port of Moskalwo on the west coast, about 30 kilometers away , is also out of service.

history

After crude oil was discovered in the area of today's city in 1880 , the settlement that was initially called Oche , later Ocha , was built. Industrial production of oil began in 1923, during the occupation of the northern part of Sakhalin Island by Japanese troops in 1920-1925. In 1938 Ocha received city rights.

A devastating earthquake struck on May 28, 1995 near Neftegorsk in the southern part of Okha Rajon. The settlement was completely destroyed. Around 2000 residents were killed. A quake that was only half as strong occurred on May 10, 2005 in the Sabo oil workers' settlement and the city of Ocha, with no casualties or destruction.

The previous mayor of the city of Okha, Alexander Khoroshavin, was appointed governor of Sakhalin Oblast in August 2007 .

economy

Besides the oblast capital of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Okha is the center of Sakhalin's oil and gas production . From here a pipeline leads to Komsomolsk-on-Amur .

Around Ocha, oil is mainly produced by Rosneft from over 3000 wells, for example from the deposits of Zentralnaja Ocha, Katangli and Odoptu. Environmentalists have expressed concerns on several occasions about the payouts from the production facilities, the drilling mud dumps and the condition of the pipelines.

There is also a thermal power plant and companies in the wood, construction and food industries.
