Nevelsk ( Russian: Невельск ) is a city in Sakhalin Oblast ( Russia ) with 11,682 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the west coast of the Sakhalin Island , about 130 km southwest of the Oblast capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , on the Nevelskoy Bay River of the Sea of Japan .

The city of Nevelsk is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

The first Russian settlers reached the area of today's Nevelsk in 1789. Between the signing of the Shimoda Treaty in 1855 and the exchange of the northern, so-called 18 Kuril Islands under the Treaty of Saint Petersburg for the southern part of the Sakhalin Island, the settlement was known as Honto under joint Russian-Japanese administration. Afterwards under exclusively Russian administration, the place belonged again to Japan from 1905 to 1945 after the Treaty of Portsmouth , which ended the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905. Between 1916 and 1927, the island's first ice-free port was built here, even in winter. In 1912 the first fish processing factory opened 20 km south on the Assanai River.

As a result of the Second World War , it belonged to the Soviet Union from 1945 onwards. On June 5, 1946, the place was given its current name (after the admiral and explorer Gennadi Nevelskoi ).

On August 2, 2007, the city was shaken by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale , which was accompanied by aftershocks lasting several days and a small tsunami . The quake left two dead and twelve seriously injured, as well as over 3,000 homeless people.

Culture, education and sights

In Nevelsk there is a nautical school and a history and local museum.

In the immediate vicinity of the city there is a colony of Steller sea lions ( Eumetopias jubatus ), which is also reflected in the city's coat of arms.

economy

Nevelsk is one of the fishing centers of Sakhalin Island and the base of operations for the trawler fleet . Little coal is mined nearby .

Protected by the warm ocean currents along the west coast of the island and by steep mountains from the east, the city is located in the mildest climatic area of the island (" Crimea of Sakhalin ") and is therefore also the center of an agricultural area (potatoes, vegetables, fruit, dairy farming).

There are efforts to make the city attractive for tourism (marine animal watching, diving, yachting).
