The Treaty of Saint Petersburg was signed on April 25th . / May 7th 1875 greg. closed between Japan and Russia . In this, Japan renounced the Sakhalin Island in favor of the Kuril Islands as far as the Kamchatka Peninsula . In addition, from 1885, Japan was given access to Russian fishing waters in return for financial support. The Treaty of Shimoda in 1855 had left Sakhalin's territory without clearly defined borders, which led to conflict between Russian and Japanese settlers. To remedy the situation, the Japanese government sent Enomoto Takeaki as an envoy to Saint Petersburg to determine the exact borders of Sakhalin.
