Uglegorsk ( Russian Углегорск ) is a city in Sakhalin Oblast ( Russia ) with 10,381 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the west coast of Sakhalin Island , about 350 km northwest of the Oblast capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , on the Tatar Sound between the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk , on the edge of the swampy lowland of the Uglegorka River near its mouth.
The city of Uglegorsk is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
Uglegorsk has a small seaport.
history
Uglegorsk came into being after 1905, while the southern part of the island Sakhalin (up to the 50th parallel ) belonged to Japan , under the name Esutoru ( Japanese 恵 須 取 町 , - chō ). As a result of the Second World War , the place came to the Soviet Union in 1945 and received city rights in 1946 under its current name - from Russian ugol for coal .

economy
In Uglegorsk there are companies in the wood, paper and construction industries as well as the food industry. The place is the center of an agricultural area (potato and vegetable cultivation). Nearby is hard coal promoted, which gave the city its name.
