The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA or UNOCHA , English United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ) is based in Geneva and New York City .

OCHA was brought into being by resolution 46/182 of December 1991 of the UN General Assembly . The organization's task is to provide humanitarian aid in needy UN member states. This is done through the coordination of aid measures, advocacy for aid measures, political action, information management and the creation and provision of financing models and services.

It has been under the direction of Mark Andrew Lowcock since 2017 .

There are 5 regional representations and 30 country offices, mainly in Africa and Asia. More than 2300 people work for the organization directly.

Budget and employees

The core functions of the OCHA are carried out by around 1900 employees in New York , Geneva and in the field (as of 2012).

The budget for 2017 accounted for about 274 million USD from. About 5% of this (approx. USD 14 million) came from the regular budget of the United Nations; the rest from its own budget, which is made available by the member states, the European Union and donating organizations.

OCHA has been operating a website under the domain reliefweb.int since 1996, which is aimed at aid organizations and the general public. Information on humanitarian disasters from various sources - aid organizations, UN organizations, government sources and press releases - is presented in a coordinated manner on this website.
