Birth of Mary

The Marientriptych in the Catholic parish church of Saint-Martin in Auxey-Duresses , a parish in the Côte-d'Or department in the French region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté , dates from the first half of the 16th century. The Renaissance altar, which was created in Burgundy , was originally installed in a church or monastery in Beaune . In 1903 the altar was added to the list of Monuments historiques in France and has been listed as a movable property in the Palissy database since 1989 .

description

The triptych by Auxey-Duresses is a three-part winged altar , on whose panels scenes from the life of Mary are painted in oil .

Central panel

The birth of Mary is shown on the middle panel . Saint Anne is in bed and is served by two maids. Three women devote themselves to the newborn child. One woman holds a white sheet ready, another holds the newborn baby over a bathtub, another woman rushes over from the next room with a water jug. In the background you can see an adjoining room with a large fireplace in which a fire is burning. Two men in expensive clothing look at the scene. In the foreground on the left is a woman, apparently uninvolved, holding a child on her lap, on the right a dog is crouching. Some of the women wear elaborate headgear and are also wrapped in sumptuous clothes.

Left wing

On the left wing you can see - in the open state - the vision of Saint Joachim , who kneels in the foreground and directs his gaze to the top left of the picture, where an angel is holding a tape with the inscription: VXOR. TVA. PARLET. TIBI. FILIAM. QVAM. VOCABIS. MAR [IAM] (Your wife will bear you a daughter whom you will name Maria). Rocks and the sea are depicted in the background, and a city fortified with towers and walls can be seen on an island. In the center of the picture a shepherd is tending his sheep.

Right wing

On the right wing Mary's temple passage is depicted. In the center of the picture you can see Mary walking up the steps of the temple, where she is received by the high priest . Her parents Anna and Joachim, who are surrounded by other people, are at the bottom right of the picture. A trader has spread his goods on the left edge of the picture.

Closed state

On the back of the left wing you can see - when closed - the Annunciation . Two tapes bear the inscription: “AVE. GRA. PLENA. DNS. TEC [UM] ”(Hail, full of grace, the Lord be with you) and“ ECCE. ANCILLA. DNI. FIAT. MIHI. SEC [VNDVM VERBVM] TVVM “(See I am the handmaid of the Lord, it be done to me according to your word). The circumcision of Jesus is depicted on the back of the right wing. The scenes on the back of the two wings are executed in grisaille painting.
