UN emergency aid coordinator

The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator ( English Emergency Relief Coordinator , shortly ERC ) is the coordinator for humanitarian relief operations of the United Nations . This function is carried out by the respective Director of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), who is then also the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs . The office has been held by the British Mark Andrew Lowcock since 2017, and the German diplomat Ursula Brigitte Müller has also been the deputy since 2017 .

tasks

The tasks of the emergency aid coordinator can be divided into the following three core areas:

  • Developing procedures and coordination to assist the United Nations Secretary-General ; ensure that all humanitarian concerns, including those that do not fall directly into the realm of existing institutions, e.g. B. Protection and support for displaced persons within a country are addressed;
  • Humanitarian advocate in political bodies, e.g. B. in the Security Council of the United Nations
  • Coordinating emergency humanitarian action on the ground, ensuring that adequate response mechanisms are in place, including through the involvement of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC); In addition, a quickly reacting assessment team ( UNDAC ) is provided on site.
