Jan Egeland
Jan Egeland (born September 12, 1957 in Stavanger ) is a Norwegian politician and diplomat . He works for international non-governmental organizations . Egeland was married to the politician Anne Kristin Sydnes and has two daughters.
career
From 1990 to 1997 Egeland was State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Jan Egeland was actively involved in numerous peace processes. In 1992 he was co-founder and co-organizer of the Norwegian mediation between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which in 1993 resulted in the Oslo Agreement , a declaration of principles. He also led the Norwegian delegation of the United Nations -led peace talks leading to the 1996 Oslo signed ceasefire agreement between the Government of Guatemala and the guerrillas of the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG) led. He also headed the hosts delegation, as in 1997 in Oslo the Ottawa Treaty to outlawing of anti-personnel mines was successfully negotiated and signed.
From 1999 to 2002 he worked as the United Nations Secretary General's special envoy for the Colombia conflict . During this time direct talks took place between the then Colombian President Andrés Pastrana and both the FARC and the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN). The Secretary General of the United Nations appointed James LeMoyne to succeed him.
In 2002 he took the position of Secretary General of the Norwegian Red Cross - according to his statements, also because of the unpromising situation of the UN mission in Colombia .
In 2003, he succeeded the Japanese Kenzo Oshima as Vice Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Aid Coordinator of the United Nations; he held the post until 2006. From September 1, 2007 until the end of 2010, he is director of the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs.
Since 2011 he has worked for the International Crisis Group based in Brussels as well as in the management of the non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch based in New York for the European area.
Statements in the 2006 Lebanon War
During the 2006 Lebanon War , Egeland came to Beirut as UN emergency aid coordinator on July 23, 2006 and also visited the southern Beirut residential district of Sfeir, which was badly hit by Israeli air strikes, and the former access road to the airport. He described these attacks as disproportionate and accused the Israeli government of violating international law. He accused Hezbollah of "mingling with women and children in a cowardly way" and thereby sharing responsibility for the high civilian casualties in Israeli military actions. On August 31, 2006, he also emphatically condemned the Israeli use of cluster bombs in Lebanon and, above all, its massive aggravation in the last 72 hours of the conflict as "completely immoral" .

Jan Egeland is the son of the former Minister of Education and the Church, literary researcher and university professor Kjølv Egeland . In 2012 the Norwegian comedian duo Ylvis released the song "Jan Egeland". The homage gained great popularity on the Internet.
