The Utenriksdepartementet (short: UD) is the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . It is responsible for Norway's relations with other countries and international organizations, as well as for foreign trade and development aid. Since October 2017, Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide from the conservative Høyre party has been the foreign minister and Dag Inge Ulstein from the Christian democratic Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF) the development minister of Norway.

history

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established on June 7, 1905, when the Union of Norway with Sweden was dissolved. During the Second World War , the Utenriksdepartementet was relocated to London and returned to Norway on July 1, 1945. In 1988 the Ministry of Commerce and Shipping was incorporated into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1990 the Ministry of Development (Departementet for utviklingshjelp) followed . This should enable foreign, trade and development policy to be better coordinated in a joint ministry. From 1988 to 1996 there was a trade ministerial post in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 1997 the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (Nærings- og energidepartementet) was converted into Nærings- og handelsdepartementet, i.e. a Ministry for Economy and Trade. The commercial department of the Utenrik department was spun off again. The Foreign Ministry, however, retained overall responsibility for trade policy issues.
