The Kommunal- og moderniseringsdepartementet ( KMD for short , German: Municipal and Modernization Ministry ) is a Norwegian ministry that was founded in its current form in 1948 as the municipal and labor ministry. Nikolai Astrup from the conservative Høyre party has been local government and modernization minister since January 2020 , while his party colleague Linda Hofstad Helleland is district and digitization minister .

history

The Ministry was founded on December 20, 1948 under the name Kommunal- og arbeidsdepartementet (German: Municipal and Labor Ministry ), as which it existed until 1990. The labor policy issues were outsourced by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the local political issues by the Ministry of Justice and Police at the time. At the end of 1989 the field of labor policy was outsourced to a separate ministerial post in the consumer and administration ministry and the ministry was continued as the Kommunaldepartementet ( local ministry) from 1990 to 1993 . Subsequently, the local ministry was given back the previous responsibilities and name.

In 1998 the ministry was restructured again and was given the name Kommunal- og regionaldepartementet (German: Municipal and Regional Ministry ), with responsibility for labor policy again being relinquished. As of January 1, 2014, the ministry was named Kommunal- og moderniseringsdepartementet . On January 22, 2019, a second ministerial post was created for the ministry and Nikolai Astrup became minister of digitization. The post was named District and Digitization Minister in January 2020.
