Linda Cathrine Hofstad Helleland (born August 26, 1977 in Klæbu ) is a Norwegian politician of the conservative party Høyre . Between December 2015 and January 2018 she was Minister of Culture , then until January 2019 Minister for Children and Equality in the Solberg government . Since January 2020 she has held the office of digitization and district minister. From 2017 to 2019 she was Vice-Chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Life

education and profession

Helleland studied media studies , political science and sociology at the Technical and Natural Sciences University of Norway ( NTNU ) in Trondheim from 1998 to 2000 . In 2001 she worked part-time as a nursing assistant.

Political career

From 1999 to 2000 Linda Hofstad Helleland was chairman of the youth organization Unge Høyre in the former province of Sør-Trøndelag . From 1999 to 2001 she was a city councilor in Trondheim. Between October 2001 and October 2005 she represented in the Norwegian parliament, the Storting , as the so-called Vararepresentant the party colleague Børge Brende , who as a minister could not carry out his mandate himself. From 2007 to 2008 she worked as a press advisor to her party before she was chairwoman of her party in Sør-Trøndelag from 2008 to 2009.

From 2013 to 2015 she was Chair of the Committee on Transport and Communication. In December 2015 she was appointed Norwegian Minister of Culture. In January 2018, after the Venstre party entered government, some of the ministries were reassigned and she became Minister for Children and Equality . She held this office until January 2019, when the portfolio fell to a politician to one of the Kristelig Folkeparti who had now also joined the government . She returned to Storting as a member of parliament. After the Fremskrittspartiet (FrP) left the government, she was reappointed to the government: On January 24, 2020 Helleland was appointed Minister for Digitization and Districts. This ministerial post is - in addition to the local minister - an office in the Ministry for Local Authorities and Modernization.

World Anti-Doping Agency

In November 2016 she was elected Vice-Chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). She advocated the complete exclusion of Russian athletes from the Olympic Games . In November 2019 she published the book Ren idrett, skittent spill ( German : Reiner Sport, dreckiges Spiel ), in which she criticized WADA. In November 2019, her successor for the vice chairmanship, the former Chinese short track runner Yang Yang , was elected.

Positions

In the run-up to the 2021 general election , Helleland became head of the program committee, which is responsible for drawing up the Høyre election program. In April 2020, she stated that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated rise in unemployment, changes had to be made to the election manifesto for the 2021 parliamentary election . In future, Norway should take less account of the environment in order to create new jobs. Her statements were criticized from many quarters, and party leader Erna Solberg also stated that she did not agree with Helleland's statements.

She is married to the Høyre politician Trond Helleland .
