Tor Mikkel Wara (* 27. December 1964 in Karasjok as Tor Mikkel Vara ) is a Norwegian politician Right Fremskrittspartiet (FrP). From April 2018 to March 2019 he was Minister of Justice in the Solberg government .

Life

Wara was born in the municipality of Karasjok in the northern Norwegian province of Finnmark . It is officially registered as Tor Mikkel Vara, but uses the Wara spelling. According to his own statements, he took over the spelling from his father, who also wrote the last name with a W. When asked, the Ministry of Justice stated that Wara was a Norwegian version of the Finnish name Vaara. He studied social economy and political science at the University of Oslo .

Political career

Wara was a city councilor in Oslo between 1987 and 1989. In 1987 he was also elected chairman of the youth organization Fremskrittspartiets Ungdom (FpU), which he remained until 1990. In the parliamentary elections in 1989 Wara moved into the Norwegian national parliament in Storting . There he represented the constituency of Oslo until 1993 and was a member of the finance committee. Until September 1992 Wara served as secretary of the FrP parliamentary group.

In the period from 1991 to 1993 Wara served as vice chairman of the FrP. He then did not hold any political office until 2018 and withdrew completely from active politics for some time, as he said he did not want to support the populist orientation of his party with regard to immigration and refugee issues. Instead, Wara began to work in the PR industry, from 2003 he worked in his own consultancy, Wara Consulting . He later became more involved in politics and on April 4, 2018 he was appointed Minister of Justice in the Solberg government.

Resignation as Minister of Justice

On March 10, 2019, his private car parked in front of his home was set on fire. At first it was suspected that it was an act by political opponents. However, on March 14, 2019, his partner Laila Anita Bertheussen was arrested because she was suspected of having set the car on fire by the Norwegian domestic secret service Politiets sikkerhetstjeneste (PST). The assumption that it was possibly a production had already been expressed by some left-wing artists who had been involved in a legal dispute with her for some time. Above all, the artists pointed out that the threats made against the couple were written in incorrect Norwegian, which, according to them, was too obvious an indication of the perpetrators' origin. After the arrest of his partner, Wara initially took leave of his office as Minister of Justice and announced his resignation on March 28, 2019. In September 2019, the investigations into the case were initially concluded and handed over to the public prosecutor's office. However, this asked the PST to re-investigate in October. On January 23, 2020, it was announced that an indictment would be brought against Bertheussen. In addition to the threats against her husband, she was also accused of threats against the two FrP politicians Christian and Ingvil Smines Tybring-Gjedde .

In December 2019, the Norwegian consultancy First House announced that Wara would start working as a consultant for the company in January 2020.
