Henrik Asheim (born August 21, 1983 in Bærum ) is a Norwegian politician of the conservative party Høyre . From 2008 to 2012 he headed the youth organization Unge Høyre . Asheim has been a Member of Parliament in Storting since 2013, and has been the minister for research and higher education in his country since January 2020.

Career

After graduating from secondary school in 2002, he worked as a substitute teacher until 2003. From 2006 to 2008 he worked as a receptionist and in the personnel department of an Oslo hotel.

Unge Høyre chairman

From 2005 to 2006 Asheim was chairman of the youth organization Unge Høyre in what was then Akershus Province . He then served as deputy chairman at the state level until 2008 before heading the youth party for four years until 2012. Between 2007 and 2011, Asheim also sat in the local parliament of his home town Bærum and he was a member of the Fylkesting of Akershus.

Storting MP and Minister

In the parliamentary elections in 2013 , Asheim moved into the Norwegian national parliament in Storting for the first time . He represents the constituency and he was initially a member of the church, education and research committee. Following the 2017 election , he moved to the Finance Committee, where he took over the chairmanship in February 2018. From September 15 to November 26, 2017, Asheim took over the post of Minister of Education on a temporary basis, as Minister of Education Torbjørn Røe Isaksen took paternity leave. Asheim then returned as a member of parliament.

After the Fremskrittspartiet left the Solberg government , the cabinet was restructured in January 2020. Asheim was appointed as the new Minister for Research and Higher Education on January 24, 2020. He took over this position in the Ministry of Education from the Venstre politician Iselin Nybø .

Private

Asheim is homosexual and in 2014 criticized the decision of the Norwegian Church that same-sex couples were not allowed to marry in church.
