The general election in Norway in 2013 took place on September 9, 2013. The date of the election followed the Norwegian tradition that national elections take place on a Monday in September. As a result of this election, the Jens Stoltenberg II government was replaced by the Solberg government.

Electoral system

The 169 members of the Storting , the national Norwegian parliament, were elected . There were 19 constituencies ( Fylke ). In each constituency, all but one mandate was distributed according to the proportion of votes. The remaining seat served as a compensation mandate. The compensation mandates create a nationwide approximately proportional distribution of seats between the parties. Compensation mandates could only be obtained by parties that received at least four percent of the votes nationwide.

A coalition of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (Ap), the Socialist Left Party and the Agrarian Center Party ruled for eight years before the election . As of 2009, this coalition had 86 out of 169 seats.

Survey

According to polls before the election, a clear success of the bourgeois opposition was considered quite likely for a long time . Although the Social Democrats and their partners were able to gain ground again in recent weeks, which was confirmed by the election results as the strongest party, the votes were not enough to outperform the minority coalition consisting of the conservative Høyre and the Progressive Party (FrP), supported by the Christian Democrats (KrF) and Venstre, was elected to government.
