Kystpartiet ( German The Coastal Party , abbreviation Kp ) is a conservative political party in Norway . It is represented in some local councils, but currently not in the national parliament, the Storting .

history

The predecessor organizations of the Kystpartiet included especially district political and EU- critical groups such as the alliance Borgerlige mot EU (bourgeois against the EU). After the national referendum on Norway's accession to the European Union, which was rejected by a majority in 1994, the later party founders believed that there was no political organization in Norway that consistently represented the will of the people on this issue. At the same time, fishermen and farmers in Northern Norway complained about what they considered to be an overly centralized course in Norwegian politics, which did not take sufficient account of the needs of the peripheral regions . A loose alliance of EU opponents and so-called kystopprørere (literally: coastal rebels ) therefore decided to create their own party.

Since corresponding deadlines could no longer be met before the parliamentary elections in 1997, the initiative initially joined the Tverrpolitisk Folkevalgte list , a free and also Eurosceptic group of voters. The top candidate on this list was the fisherman and whaler Steinar Bastesen from Brønnøysund , who made it straight to Storting. Because of his profession and his political focus, the list was often referred to as Fiskerlisten (fisherman's list) in the media . After two years of parliamentary work, Bastesen took up the old plan and founded an independent party on February 1, 1999, which has been called Kystpartiet since then . On September 24, 1999, the party and its name were officially recognized by the Publicus Notary in Norway. In 2001, the party entered national parliamentary elections for the first time under the name Kystpartiet and was able to defend its only mandate.

Bastesen served as the party's chairman between 1999 and 2005. After internal disputes, he was replaced by Roy Waage in 2005. Between 2007 and 2009 Kjell Ivar Vestå led the party, who later, like other top representatives of the party, joined the right-wing populist Fremskrittspartiet . Per Roger Vikten has been the first chairman since October 2016. Steinar Bastesen was expelled from the party in 2008 for “disloyal behavior”. At that time the Kp had 800 members.

The Kystpartiet sees itself as a "conservative center party". According to its own statements, it is oriented towards basic democratic, humanistic and Christian values and makes it its task to protect “the family, local interests and the nation”. Other important framework values for the party are ecology and sustainability .

Due to its historical roots, the party is heavily involved in fisheries policy . She advocates that the fish stocks on the Norwegian coast are managed and regulated “independently of agreements with other countries”. She rejects large “concentrations of ownership” as well as opportunities for globally operating foreign companies to access the Norwegian market. Tax policy is designed to allow fishermen to own their own ship and keep it profitable. The crew on the cutters should consist of at least 50 percent Norwegian citizens.

According to the party's vision, agriculture has to pursue the goal of "purely Norwegian food production", which would make the country independent from abroad. If they are in demand, ecological products should be prioritized. At the same time, the party advocates the expansion of gentle tourism in accordance with the principles of nature conservation .

In the energy industry , "the privatization and sale of the Norwegian hydropower system" should be prevented. Hydropower as the most environmentally friendly source of energy should continue to be used with preference in the future. In addition, the party advocates the use of renewable resources such as sun, wind and wave power . She favors smaller production capacities. Norwegian oil and gas production is not called into question; However , the party is opposed to plans for offshore oil production near the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos for environmental reasons.

In accordance with its district political principles, the Kystpartiet calls for a "decentralization of public jobs", i. H. a corresponding outsourcing in favor of the districts as well as an improvement of the infrastructure in structurally weak regions, among other things with the means of the national oil fund .

The party wants to "limit and control" immigration to Norway. It still strictly rejects the country's membership in the EU.

Election results

The election results clearly show that the party is based in Northern Norway. When she ran for the first time under her name in the 2001 parliamentary elections, she won a disproportionately large number of votes in the northern Fylker . With a share of the vote of 10.9 percent in Nordland , Steinar Bastesen managed to defend the mandate he had previously won for the Tverrpolitisk Folkevalgte . Nationwide, the party received 44,010 votes, which corresponded to a share of 1.7 percent.

For the 2005 parliamentary elections , the party ran for the first time in all 19 Fylker, including in the two provinces ( Hedmark , Oppland ) that have no coastline. Nevertheless, the party only achieved a share of the vote of 0.8 percent and lost its seat in the Storting. She also won 59 percent of all votes in this election in the three northern Fylker Nordland, Troms and Finnmark . The negative development continued in the 2009 parliamentary elections . The party lost massive votes, especially in its stronghold of Northern Norway, and only had a share of 0.2 percent. In 2013 , the KP reached 3,311 votes (0.1 percent share).

After the 2007 local elections, the party was represented in 20 local councils. In Loppa and Skjervøy it provided the mayor, in Lurøy , Torsken and Kvænangen the deputy mayor.
