The Norske Samers Riksforbund (NSR for short; Sami : Norgga Sámiid Riikkasearvi ; German : Reich Association of Norwegian Sami ) is a Norwegian - Sami cultural organization that also functions as a party in the Sameting (Norway) . The NSR was founded in 1968.

history

Seed Association

In 1948, Sami living in Oslo founded the organization Oslo sámi sær'vi (German: Oslo Seed Association ). In 1950 it was renamed Sámi sær'vi and from then on strived to become an association for all Norwegian Sami. In the 1950s and 1960s, local branches of the association were therefore founded in the more northerly areas, for example in Karasjok in 1959. Overall, the organization therefore shifted more to the Finnmark area . This started discussions about whether to move the headquarters from Oslo, which is far from Finnmark.

Foundation of the Norske Samers Riksforbund

In 1968 the organization was renamed again, it was now called Norga Sámiid Riikkasær'vi (Norwegian: Norske Samers Riksforbund ). Due to the new Sami spelling, the association was later given the current Sami name Norgga Sámiid Riikkasearvi .

From 1968 further local branches were founded and the NSR became an important player in the so-called Alta conflict . This was a conflict between the Norwegian Sami and the government, which lasted from 1968 to 1982, after they had planned to use Finnmark for hydropower plants. The government therefore set up the so-called Samerettsutvalg (Committee for Sami Rights) in 1980 , in which the NSR also participated. The committee eventually led to the Norwegian Sami having their own parliament, the Sameting .

Party in the meeting

The Norske Samers Riksforbund has been running for the Norwegian Sami Parliament since the first Saturday elections in autumn 1989. It was Ole Henrik Magga first in 1989 Sami Parliament President. In addition, politicians who are formally non-partisan but linked to the NSR often move into parliament. Together with the Arbeiderpartiet , the association is one of the most successful parties. In the 2017 election, around 18 people with connections to the NSR entered the meeting with a total of 39 MPs. In the first election in 1989 there were even 24 of the 39 MPs who belonged to the Norske Samers Riksforbund.

In addition to its political activities, the NSR continued to exist as a Sami cultural organization.
