Ole Henrik Magga (born August 12, 1947 in Kautokeino ) is a Sami linguist and politician.

Linguist Magga

As a linguist, Ole Henrik Magga is best known as a syntactician . In his master's thesis at the University of Oslo "Lokative læt-setninger i samisk" (Lokative " to be" sentences in Sami ) he deals with a classic topic of syntactic theory, the structure of existential sentences and habitat sentences used in the Ural languages have a very similar structure. The doctoral thesis from 1986 dealt with the structure of the Sami verb phrase, in particular the interaction between modal verbs and infinitives. He has also published a South Sami grammar with his wife Lajla Mattsson Magga.

Magga became professor for Finno-Ugric languages at the University of Oslo in 1987 , after Knut Bergsland, but resigned to work at the Sami University in Kautokeino, where he became a university lecturer in 1990 and a professor in 1997. Magga joined the Norwegian Academy of Sciences in 1993 .

Politician Magga

Magga was Chairman of the Norwegian National Sami Association from 1980 to 1985 and the first President of the Sami Parliament in Norway from 1989 to 1997. From 1992 to 1995 Magga was a member of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples (WCIP). In 2002, Magga became the first chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Affairs .

Awards

In 2006 Magga became Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for his "efforts for the cause of the Sami and indigenous peoples". In the same year he received the Human Rights Award from the University of Oslo. In 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Tromsø. When it was founded in 2008, he was appointed a member of the Finnmark Commission.
