The Sami University ( North Sami Sami allaskuvla (SA) ; Norwegian Samisk høgskole (SH) ) in Kautokeino (Guovdageaidnu) is a university for Sami studies and the training of teachers and journalists in Norway .

It was founded in 1989 and is the only institution that conducts research, training and administration in North Sami. Its aim is to promote the use of the Sami language and the preservation of Sami culture among the Sami .

Research and Teaching

The Sami University is officially recognized and has been the only one in the former province of Finnmark since 2013 . Your students and scientists come from the countries in Sápmi : Norway, Finland , Sweden and Russia . The university belongs to the networks University of the Arctic (UArctic) and World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC, World Association for Higher Education of Indigenous Peoples ).

The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees. In addition to primary school teacher training up to the tenth grade, Sami journalism and folk art ( duodji ) are taught. A bachelor's degree is possible in reindeer herding . Doctoral degrees are offered in the field of Sami language and literature . The annual range of lectures includes a limited selection of around 24 out of 40 lectures. In addition, various language courses and training opportunities can be attended.

The scientific series Dieđut and the trade journal Sámi dieđalaš áigečála are published .

The university adopted the logo from the Sami Institute. It shows a sun symbol, which also shows that the Sami live in all four directions.

history

The university was founded in 1989 and merged in 2005 with the Sami Institute (Sámi Instituhtta / Nordisk Samisk Institutt (NSI)) founded in 1973 . With the move to the Diehtosiida Science Center, research and teaching have been under one roof since July 2009. Diehtosiida also houses the Sami section of the Norwegian State Archives and a section of the Sami Parliament.
