The University of Stavanger ( Norwegian : Universitetet i Stavanger ) is a state university in Stavanger and has around 10,700 students and 1,400 employees. The rector of the university is Klaus Mohn (2019–).

history

Its predecessor, the Stavanger University of Applied Sciences , was founded on August 1, 1994 with the merger of six state and one private universities. In 2000, the strategy was drawn up to achieve university status within four years. This required four doctoral courses. At this point in time one could already obtain a doctorate in petroleum engineering and offshore engineering . In June 2003 the university also received the right to award a doctorate in the fields of curative education and risk management / social security . In the same month, the application for university status was sent. This was approved in August 2004 by NOKUT (Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education). On January 1, 2005 it finally received the desired university status and on January 17, 2005 the University of Stavanger was officially opened by King Harald V.

Faculties

The university is divided into three faculties:

  • Humanistic Faculty
  • Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Technical and natural science faculty
