The Norwegian Academy of Sciences , Norwegian Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi ( DNVA ), was founded in Oslo in 1857 under the name Videnskabsselskabet i Christiania . The aim of the academy is to promote science in the country and to represent Norwegian science to foreign academies and international organizations. The Norwegian Academy of Sciences is also responsible for awarding the Abel Prize .

The Norwegian Academy of Sciences has 219 places for Norwegian members and 183 places for foreign members. It has two departments: the mathematical-scientific and the historical-philosophical.

The president of the academy is Hans Petter Graver .

Members from the German-speaking area are u. a. Helmut Birkhan , Winfried Denk , Klaus Düwel , Hans-Heinz Emons , Ekkehard Kreft , Robert Nedoma , Fritz Paul , Bernhard Schrader and Jörn Thiede .
