Winfried Denk (born November 12, 1957 in Munich ) is a German physicist . In 2003 he was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize .

Live and act

Denk studied physics with a focus on biophysics , first from 1978 to 1981 in Munich, then until 1984 in Zurich, where he graduated. He completed his doctoral studies in Ithaca, New York until 1989 and spent his postdoctoral time in Rüschlikon , Switzerland, in the IBM research laboratory before moving to Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. In 1999 Winfried Denk became Director at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, where he headed the Department of Biomedical Optics. Since September 2011 he has been Director at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in Martinsried and heads the Department of Electrons - Photons - Neurons .

Denk mainly deals with the new and further development of microscopes. His two-photon microscope represented a breakthrough, as better results can be achieved with this microscope with significantly less energy consumption. The multi-quantum method, which is based on his investigations, allows, for example, better decoding of image movements on the retina. Denk is currently working on downsizing his microscopes. Brain research in particular promises new, far-reaching insights from this.
