Bernhard Schräder

Bernhard Schräder (born September 26, 1900 in Hörstel , † December 10, 1971 in Osnabrück ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and bishop .

Schräder studied in Münster , Hamburg and Freiburg im Breisgau and received his doctorate there on January 31, 1924 with the thesis on free welfare in Baden to a doctorate in political science (Dr. rer. Pol.). During his studies in 1918 he joined the Catholic student association WkSt.V Unitas-Winfridia Münster .

On December 18, 1926, Schräder was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Osnabrück .

Then he became, among other things, chaplain in Neumünster , where he decisively promoted the later canonized martyr priest Eduard Müller in his youth, and at the end of the thirties pastor in Schwerin, then part of the Diocese of Osnabrück .

After the connections to Osnabrück had become difficult due to the occupation and division of Germany, Schräder was appointed Episcopal Commissioner on April 16, 1946 and headed the part of the diocese in the Soviet Zone / GDR . By Pope Pius XII. Schräder was appointed papal house prelate and papal secret chamberlain ( monsignor ).

Schräder made himself known to the communist rulers by making public statements that were critical of the regime and anti-communist, etc. a. unpopular against youth consecration .

Since the number of Catholics in Mecklenburg increased to 15% temporarily after the end of the Second World War due to flight and expulsion , Schräder was appointed Vicar General for Mecklenburg on December 1, 1958 . On 22 June 1959 he was appointed auxiliary bishop with the titular Scyrus collected and on September 8, 1959 by the bishop of Osnabrück Hermann Helmut Wittler ordained . Co -consecrators were Bishop Otto Spülbeck von Meißen and Auxiliary Bishop Friedrich Maria Rintelen from Magdeburg .

Schräder earned considerable services in building up the parish and dean's structure. He took part in the Second Vatican Council as a council father .
