Culture and sights

Buildings

The Surenburg moated castle in the Riesenbeck district and its history goes back to the 15th century. After the conquest of Bevergern by the bishopric of Münster from the county of Tecklenburg , it was probably built by the bishop of Münster in 1400. The first documentary mention was made in 1474 as the residence of the Lords of Langen and was rebuilt in its current form from the 18th century. The Surenburg is the most famous moated castle in the Tecklenburger Land.

The Gravenhorst monastery was founded by the Mecklenburg ministerial Konrad von Brochterbeck in 1256. In the following 50 years after it was founded, Gravenhorst was mainly able to acquire goods from the Counts of Tecklenburg and their ministerials. In terms of ownership, it is noticeable that many of the previous owners belonged to the immediate retinue of the counts. The main focus of monastic ownership was in the southwest of Tecklenburger Land. In 2004 the former monastery was completely renovated and is now used as an art house. Gravenhorst is one of three Cistercian convents, which arose in the Tecklenburger Land in the 13th century , along with the Leeden and the bowl .
