Ems-Leine-Express ( RE 60 ) is the name of a regional express train route in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony that has served the city of Rheine on the Ems , the Lower Saxony regional center of Osnabrück with the East Westphalian city of Minden and connects the Lower Saxony regional centers of Hanover and Braunschweig .

The Ems-Leine-Express is one of the lines with particular regional interest in North Rhine-Westphalia. On its entire route, it crosses the state border between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia three times at the following points:

  • between Ibbenbüren-Laggenbeck and Osnabrück old town,
  • between Melle and Bünde,
  • between Minden and Bückeburg.

History and future

In 1998 the line began in Bad Bentheim and ran via Osnabrück to Hanover. In 2000 the beginning was withdrawn to Rheine and the train route extended to Braunschweig. The route Bad Bentheim - Rheine was only operated by the Wiehengebirgs-Bahn . The line was operated by DB Regio Nord . WestfalenBahn GmbH has been operating the route since December 2015 . 13 six-part double-decker railcars of the type KISS from the Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail are used.

The RE 60 line designation, which is only available in North Rhine-Westphalia, and the name Ems-Leine-Express were introduced for the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia as early as 1998 when the integral clock timetable ( NRW clock ) was introduced. As part of the timetable change in December 2014, the line was also given the designation RE 60 in Lower Saxony.

Offer

The line runs every two hours. Together with the trains called Weser-Leine-Express in North Rhine-Westphalia , which also run every two hours to Bielefeld , there is an hourly service between Braunschweig and Löhne (Westphalia) . The Wiehengebirgs-Bahn runs every hour between Kirchlengern and Rheine . These trains are reached in connection with the Weser-Leine-Express in Herford . In addition, the entire route is served by intercity trains.

Until the timetable change in December 2015, the trains on this line consisted of five double-decker cars with class 111 electric locomotives . Occasionally a class 146.1 electric locomotive was also used. The use of double-decker control cars meant that the locomotive did not have to be moved at the terminal stations - the control car drove ahead in the direction of Rheine. Between Osnabrück and Hanover there was a gastronomic service with a minibar.

These KISS multiple units have been in use since the Westfalenbahn took over operations .

Train run

The Ems-Leine-Express uses the following routes from west to east:

The train covers a total of 270.4 kilometers between Rheine and Braunschweig. The scheduled journey time (including intermediate stops) between Rheine and Braunschweig is 3:03 h, resulting in an average travel speed of around 90 km / h.

Tariff

On its journey, this regional express runs through a total of three regional transport associations:

  • The Westphalian tariff applies between Rheine and Minden (except for journeys between Osnabrück and Melle),
  • between Haste and Hämelerwald (tickets with a maximum of one day validity) or Bückeburg and Peine (season tickets) the tariff of the Greater Hanover Transport (GVH) and applies
  • between Hämelerwald and Braunschweig, the tariff of the Braunschweig Region Region (VRB) tariff applies .

The Lower Saxony ticket is valid on the entire route. The Lower Saxony tariff applies to routes that are not part of any or more than one transport association, as well as between Osnabrück and Melle .
