The Ibbenbüren-Esch station (until December 12, 2004 Esch (Westphalia) ) is a station in the Ibbenbüren district of Püsselbüren on the Löhne – Rheine railway line . In terms of freight traffic , the station continues to bear the name Esch (Westphalia) . This last freight station in the urban area of the city of Ibbenbüren is of particular importance in the freight transport of industry and the port of Uffeln .

history

Signal box of the station

Esch (Westphalia) station was put into operation as a stop on August 1, 1889. The reason for the name Esch (Westphalia) was the fact that the station name “Püsselbüren” was not available from the Püsselbüren station, which was used for goods handling of the Püsselbüren conveyor tunnel, but also goods from nearby factories such as the coking plant, Köster's glassworks or quarries. The tracks of the later coal washing plant of the Westfeld colliery are still at this location today .

The name Esch comes from Apken Esch, a farming community in today's Püsselbüren, where the train station is located. At that time, Püsselbüren was still a peasantry from Ibbenbüren and not a part of the city as it is today. When the Püsselbüren station was abandoned by the railway, the renaming of the Esch station failed because of the money that was demanded by the railway.

The opening of the colliery railway to the Oeynhausenschacht on the Schafberg above Ibbenburen brought a strong increase in goods . Before this connection, the cooperative as well as a wooden shoe factory and a light rail connection for the sandstones from Dickenberger Steinbrüche brought goods sales.

Closed level crossing at the train station

A serious accident occurred on New Year's Eve 1944 when a freight train loaded with ammunition, which was parked in the station, was set on fire by low-flying aircraft . V-1 missiles are said to have been camouflaged under straw on the train. Another accident happened in 1948 when the brakes of a steam locomotive on the mine railway failed and numerous freight wagons loaded with coal derailed and overturned.

In 1962, a new high point in freight traffic was reached when the connecting track to Ibbenbürener Hafen was built in Uffeln . In 1972 the old signal box was replaced by a new push button signal box directly at the level crossing.

On August 27, 2010, the station and the signal box were damaged by water from the Cathleen Deep. The overhead line was dead and the tracks were partially flooded.

Freight transport

Esch freight yard

Today, the Esch freight yard is the last remaining in the urban area of the city of Ibbenbüren. Above all, coal from the Ibbenbüren mine is handled here. Several tracks of the freight station are owned by the mine, which has a several kilometers long colliery railway from the station to the mine. Often, due to the steep route up to the Schafberg, the special high-mountain locomotives of the Zechenbahn can be observed here, which either hand over the coal trains to Deutsche Bahn or transport them to the port in Uffeln.

The siding to the port supplies the port with bulk goods such as gravel. The Akzo Nobel plant returns some of its products by rail.

The freight wagons are picked up from the train station and assembled into trains at Osnabrück Central Station .

At the moment, around 2 million euros worth of goods are handled each month at Esch train station.
