The Oldenzaal train station is a train station in the Dutch city of Oldenzaal near the German border . It was opened on October 18, 1865 on the Almelo – Salzbergen railway line.

The station building

The first station building is a unique design and was opened at the same time as the railway line. The construction is similar to the Bad Bentheim train station and the Almelo train station . In the years 1884 and 1887 the building was rebuilt and enlarged. The gable was also paved.

Surname

From 1890 to 1935 the station was officially called 'Station Oldenzaal AS'. The letters stood for Spoorweg-Maatschappij Almelo-Salzbergen . This name was necessary because the Oldenzaal EO station existed in Oldenzaal through the Lokaalspoorwegmaatschappij Enschede-Oldenzaal .

The second station building

The first station building burned down on July 14, 1953. In 1957 a new station building was opened. For a long time Oldenzaal was an important border station. By the 1960s, most international trains no longer stopped in Oldenzaal and the restaurant was closed. Only a short time later, no more international trains stopped here. A large part of the station is therefore no longer used. The old restaurant is partly used again. From December 2010 to December 2013 the Grensland Express stopped every hour in Oldenzaal. Since February 2018, Oldenzaal has been served hourly by the RB61 , which again provides international train connections to Rheine – Osnabrück – Bielefeld.
