Swell:

The Almelo – Salzbergen railway line is a double-track and continuously electrified main line from Almelo in the Netherlands to Salzbergen in Lower Saxony . The power system change is carried out at the Bad Bentheim border station or multi-system railcars operate .

history

The Almelo – Salzbergen railway was built by the Dutch Spoorweg-Maatschappij Almelo-Salzbergen to connect to the Hanover Western Railway of the Royal Hanover State Railways and was opened on October 18, 1865.

The Dutch section from Almelo to Oldenzaal was equipped with an overhead contact line as early as 1951, shortly after the Second World War , to which the 1500 volts DC voltage, which is usual for the Nederlandse Spoorwegen , is applied.

The German section from Salzbergen to Bad Bentheim, on the other hand, was not electrified until a quarter of a century later with 15 kilovolt AC voltage and the frequency of 16⅔ Hertz used at that time (today 16.7 Hertz, see traction current ).

Construction of the lower line "Almelo Verdiept"

With the electrification of the last remaining section on the Dutch side of Oldenzaal (also in 1976), Bad Bentheim became a system changing station, with the supply being switched to DC or AC voltage track by track (see system separation point ).

Between 2006 and 2009, an approximately one-kilometer stretch of road in the city center of Almelo was “lowered” in order to reduce the number of level crossings. The trough construction is called "Almelo Verdiept".

service

As of 2020, there will be continuous international trains in long-distance passenger rail transport :

Using local rail transport ...

  • on the Salzbergen - Hengelo section:
  • on the Oldenzaal - Hengelo section:
  • on the Hengelo - Almelo section:

Cross-border local transport between Hengelo and Bad Bentheim was reintroduced on December 12, 2010. The Dutch company Syntus and the German company Bentheimer Eisenbahn operated the route every hour as the " Grensland Express ". The trial was limited to three years and ended in December 2013 because the number of users fell short of expectations.

From December 2017 an hourly local transport service was to be introduced again on the Bad Bentheim - Hengelo section. In the new tender for the "Teutoburg Forest Network", the use of two-system vehicles is required so that the RB 61 line can be extended beyond its previous endpoint in Bad Bentheim to Hengelo. By eliminating the change in Bad Bentheim and the continuous connection to Rheine, Osnabrück and Bielefeld, those responsible are hoping for significantly more passengers than the Grensland Express, which commuted in isolation on the Bad Bentheim - Hengelo section. Instead of 300 passengers, 750 will then use the local trains in this section. When operations began, however, there were problems with the approval of the locomotives, so that operation should not start until January 14, 2018. There were also problems when switching between the power grids, so that the Bad Bentheim - Oldenzaal - Hengelo section was initially made by buses. The rail link finally went into operation on February 26, 2018.
