The Zwolle – Almelo railway is a railway line between Zwolle and Almelo in the Netherlands, built at the end of the 19th century . It was opened on January 1, 1881. The route is single-track for the most part and is incident between Wierden and Almelo to the Deventer-Almelo railway which is double track and electrified.

history

Wierden station in earlier times

The railway line was built during the third wave of state construction of railway lines in the Netherlands, in which mainly regional rail connections were created. The Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen trains ran on the 1st January 1881 line .

The Deventer - Almelo railway was opened in 1888. This was used by HSM and ran between Wierden and Almelo train station, parallel to the Zwolle - Almelo line. After a few years, the two lines were merged and the line was double-tracked in this section.

The Almelo - Wierden line was electrified in 1951 together with the Deventer - Almelo line. In 1998 the section between Zwolle and Wierden was completely renewed. Among other things, the platforms will be rebuilt and the new ATB-NG train control system installed so that a new type of locomotive, the 3400 series , can be used on the route.

Between December 2009 and April 1, 2013 the line was interrupted due to a tunnel being built in Nijverdal . For the duration of the construction work, which is estimated at more than three years, the railway line was used in two parts, namely between Zwolle and Nijverdal West and between Nijverdal and Almelo. The Nijverdal West station, which was provisionally laid out for the duration of the work, was dismantled after the tunnel was put into operation.

From October 2015 to October 2016, the company Volker Rail electrified the 40-kilometer section from Wierden to Zwolle. During this time, the substructure was examined for possible explosive charges that are said to have been placed there during the Second World War .

In December 2017, Keolis Nederland , at that time still operating under the name Syntus , took over the operation of the passenger trains with vehicles of the Stadler Flirt type . Previously, NS operated the half-hourly sprinter connection Enschede  - Zwolle with vehicles of the type DM90 on this route .
