List of train stations in the Netherlands |
The Enschede Railway Station is the largest train station in the Dutch city of Enschede . The station is used by 9,792 people every day (2018). It is the central hub in local public transport . National regional and long-distance trains as well as the cross-border regional trains to Dortmund and Münster run there .
history
The station was opened on July 1, 1866 as the end point of the railway line from Zutphen .
After the Münster-Enschede railway company due to insolvency, the Münster-Enschede railway could not accomplish, the Company and the continued construction of which was Royal Westphalian Railway Company taken. The last section of Gronau was built together with the Dortmund-Enschede railway of the Dortmund-Gronau-Enscheder Railway Company and inaugurated on October 15, 1875.
In 1950, the old station was abandoned and to the west of it, on the site of the railway depot that existed until 1935 , a new station with a concrete building was built. Of the four platform tracks, three were designed as head platforms.
Between 1940 and 1951, passenger traffic between Gronau and Enschede was interrupted as a result of the Second World War. Freight traffic between Gronau and Enschede ceased on September 30, 1979, and passenger traffic followed two years later.
The passenger trains from Germany ended at platform 4, there was also a room for ID and customs control.
Since the line was not dismantled for strategic reasons, passenger traffic between Gronau and Enschede was resumed on November 18, 2001 after the route was renovated. Since then, regional trains have been running from Enschede to Dortmund or Münster. The track connection between the track from Germany and the Dutch track systems is interrupted, however, the line ended in Enschede at a single head track (track 5) without direct access to the other platforms.
In July and August 2013, the station was completely renovated, the train service was suspended for six weeks, with the exception of trains from Germany.
The platform on tracks 1 and 2 was extended to 340 meters. Since the reopening on August 18, the German trains have been running again on platform 4, which makes changing trains easier. Track 4 is not interrupted, but two buffer stops prevent through traffic. Track 5 was dismantled. The former platform was in the meantime used as the location for the garbage cans of the neighboring town hall and is now a footpath.
